Two missing Alberta children were found safe Thursday on a rural property in West Kelowna, B.C., according to Alberta RCMP.
The boy’s mother Krista Morrison, 35 and Daniel Ludwig, 35 her partner were also located and arrested on outstanding warrants. Both were charged with contravening a custody order for one of the children and are being held in custody in British Columbia.
The investigation began in early July and involved extensive searches of rural properties across multiple jurisdictions. Specialized RCMP units in Alberta, British Columbia, the Northwest Territories and Yukon were involved in the search.
“After approximately two-and-a-half-months of sustained investigative efforts, we are grateful to report that both children have been found safe,” said Insp. Breanne Brown of the Alberta RCMP Serious Crimes Branch.
Staff Sgt. Derrick Gladdish, the investigation’s team commander, said investigators told him the children appeared to be in good health and did not seem to be in distress when they were found.
An Amber Alert had been issued for one of the children but was later cancelled when the conditions for an alert were no longer met. Police continued investigating the children’s whereabouts after the cancellation.
The children are currently in the care of B.C.’s Ministry of Children and Family Development. Arrangements are being made to transfer them to Alberta Children and Family Services.
Morrison and Ludwig will have bail hearings in British Columbia, where the BC Crown Prosecution Service will seek their detention and return to Alberta to appear before the courts.
