General standards
Accuracy and Fact-Checking
Verify all facts, quotes, and statistics before submission. Use reliable primary sources whenever possible. Keep detailed records of your interviews and research. Include links to source materials when relevant
Double-check the spelling of all names, titles, and dates
Writing Style
- Write in a clear, concise style
- Follow Canadian Press (CP) guidelines
- Use active voice and strong verbs
- Keep paragraphs short and focused
- Include a compelling lead that draws readers in
- Avoid jargon and unnecessary academic language

Edmonton Edge is committed to delivering accurate, engaging, and relevant news to our campus community. We strive to maintain high journalistic standards while providing opportunities for students to develop their writing and reporting skills.
Ethical Guidelines
Conflicts of Interest
- Disclose any personal connections to your story subjects
- Do not write about organizations you’re actively involved with
- Avoid accepting gifts or favors from sources
- Maintain professional boundaries with sources
Fair and Balanced Reporting
- Be impartial when handling any news affecting parties or matters that are controversial
- Give fair representation to all sides
- Give subjects fair opportunity to respond to criticism
- Avoid editorializing in news stories
- Clearly label opinion pieces and personal columns
Sources
- Generally there are no anonymous sources in an article unless approved by one of the instructors sources in BCSC 397 or BCSC 497
- Obtain explicit permission for all direct quotes
- Inform sources how their information will be used
Photography Guidelines
Photos mean there’s a better chance of having your story published!
- Submit high-resolution images (minimum 300 DPI)
- Include complete captions with all photos
- Obtain permission from identifiable subjects
- Credit photographers appropriately
- Follow campus policies regarding photography
