Clubs on campus: MacEwan game dev club

Less than a year after it was founded, the MacEwan Game Dev Club has grown quickly, welcoming dozens of students to a new-member orientation in late January.

Haris Kajtazovic began the club in December 2024. He wanted to provide a platform for a community that was underrepresented on the MacEwan campus after COVID-19 caused the previous Game Dev Club to dissolve.

“We started this club with 15 members, five of whom were executives,” Kajtazovic said. “I went to the first ever Game-Con Canada in Edmonton, and I asked potential MacEwan students if they would come here if we had a game development club. The reception was, ‘Yes, we would.’”

Now there are more than 70 members that attend the meetings at MacEwan. Their Discord server includes over 300 members spanning across all Edmonton universities.

This club was made for people of varying levels of experience with game development. The executives stress that everyone is welcome to attend.

“We wanted a place for us at MacEwan where we could celebrate our love for game development,” said club president Ryan Bernal. “We saw the demand and we wanted to provide a space where people could learn about game development, make games and make friends.”

“When I graduate, I want to get into the gaming industry as an artist. When I learned this club was more than just programmers, I was sold. It is an opportunity for me to explore what I want to do after school,” Brost said.

Students interested in game development and video games can attend the MacEwan Game Dev Club meetings in Room 6-131 every Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m.
