MacEwan University is on track to reach its ambitious goal of 30,000 students by 2030, aiming to meet Alberta’s growing demand for skilled, job-ready graduates, President Dr. Annette Trimbee said during her State of the University address.

Trimbee outlined plans to expand enrollment from the current estimated 18,108 students, emphasizing the role of a new School of Business building that will accommodate 7,500 students. The university recently increased spring and summer class enrollment by 16 per cent, a move aimed at supporting the growth target, she said.

She also highlighted ongoing investments in support staff, including new social workers, registered psychologists, and a health promotion specialist. These additions, she said, aim to assist students with wellness, housing, financial aid, and connections to community resources.

Despite these developments, concerns about the potential impacts of the university’s expansion on students have emerged.

Gabriel Ambutong, president of the Students’ Association of MacEwan University, said that affordability and student well-being remain top concerns. “Our top priority for the year is cost of education, cost of living, mental health, and also employability [of students],” Ambutong said.

According to Ambutong, some students on campus struggle with issues like food security and affordability, making it essential for the association to advocate for their needs.

Ambutong acknowledged that the university’s steps align with its objectives, but emphasized that many students continue to struggle with challenges such as food security and rising costs.

  1. Why is there no mention of the pro-Palestine protestors or their interruptions? Why is the university continuing to silence journalistic voices and truth-seekers? Absolutely deplorable action by MacEwan University, Trimbee, and Craig Monk.
